the rat in the rattrap

The rat in the rattrap,
looks at me in utter amazement,
jumps from here to there,
there to here,
in her restricted domain.

The rat in the rattrap,
shivers in her outstanding apprehension,
“What will you do with me”,
its meek, terrified eyes ask.
I smile and it jumps back,
unaware of its destiny,
“Won’t hurt you”, I reply sometimes,
oblivious that it doesn’t understand,
not this.

The rat in the rattrap,
freed a few hours ago,
The empty cage awaits anew,
while its prisoner plays outside,
free from being haunted by a human,
independent, yet vulnerable,
unbound, yet unsafe,
free from a home,
free to a world.

the rat in the rattrap,
no more a prisoner,
and yet a prisoner.
